There is deathly silence in my house today. Quite a contrast to yesterday, when a whole bunch guys landed up here, the two friends circles of both brothers. So, there were the married types (eldest brother's friends) trying to pacify disgruntled wives over their mobiles and the merry bachelors (second brother's friends) making numerous sorties to liquor shops and stacking the fridge with beer. The occasion? The Quarter Final matches that they were going to watch on the giant screen installed in the lawns.
Normally my house is crawling with guys but yesterday there were too many. Two diversely opposite groups who normally avoid each other by having their Friday get together in opposite ends of the house. There were guys looking at the skies and fretting over the cloud formation while there were some who kept opening the fridge from time to time, as though by checking up on the beer would make it chill faster. ( and they call us gals fussy!!!)
The roads were deserted by 8 pm and me and the doggies had the full run of the street for some quality time together. I got back to see Portugal and England battling it out in what seemed a really tough game. What was interesting was the crowd watching the match on the giant screen. Everyone was wearing the colors of the team they were supporting. So both teams had fair support. My Dad and his card group were sitting timidly, a safe distance away for they risked getting crushed by guys jumping up and down and cursing and shouting and spilling beer. The general atmosphere was charged and one could feel the tension in the air. It was interesting to watch the match and the emotions it evoked and the emotions in the wake of the aftermath of the match. The English supporters were dejected while the Portuguese supporters were jubilant and doing some kind of dance to celebrate on the lawn.
The crowd had their food and was ready for the next cliffhanger...Brazil Vs France. By this time I decided to sleep. However sleep was interrupted by sudden shouts and I rushed out from time to time to see that the score was still 0-0. Somewhere in some ungodly hour I was shaken awake by my brother telling me that the match was over. I went out groggily to see one section of the crowd sitting in stunned silence while another was jumping up and down. France had won *Yawn*.
I went back to sleep and got up to an unnatural silence today. Except my mom and the maids everyone is fast asleep. There are bodies everywhere, there is one guy sleeping outside in front of the giant screen bottle still in hand. And there are some on the sofa, while most of them are stretched out on the verandah on the mattresses hired for the day (they thought of everything).
Guess it will be a peaceful Sunday today.

*sobs*
as of now, i have lost the sense of loyalty.
i will back m/s ballack & klose & co. and root for a german win.
portugal vs germany in the finals? yummy!!!
but the way luck is going this year,
i think we might even see an italy france final....
*more sobs*
i finally caught the world cup fever day before. plumped for germany and they won but yesterday it was heartbreak with england losing.
its funny to read how u suffered it in silence...we used to get thrown out of our friends houses during previous world cups coz the moms had enuf of our behalams and the occasional swearing!!!
even i am plotting my football post...when i look at my old friends circle and see their soccer mania like never before...i realize part of it is bcoz none of these guys will ever be able to play the game again.
Alexis:"For me the World Cup is over :-("
This seems to be the refrain everywhere :) But I think the best teams won. And since I watch football(ers), my world cup will end on the last day :p
It is heartbreaking to see the fans and it was all the more real for me for I saw it first hand at home. Lots of long faces here lol
Harjee: "but the way luck is going this year,
i think we might even see an italy france final"
That would be a rather insipid fare I guess ? The Euoropean teams seem to be on a roll. Smile and enjoy the rest of the games :)
Jiby: I am sure your take on football will be as good as that post on 'A team worth cheering for". You have the ability to actually take the reader to the arena. About suffering in silence, the guys were outside and I am kind of used to it because they have the same arrangements for Cricket too :)
Lets all cheer for a portugal vs germany finals and then pray that germany whopp ass!!
But fancy header for this post. I like.
hey sil....football is NASHA...beer an addiction...both together ...deadly combination....and LET GOD BE WITH HITLER'S SONS....
"there is one guy sleeping outside in front of the giant screen bottle still in hand".,,, could it be a white dizzy, disoriented, male in his early 30's? My wonderful BIL is missing in action ever since England( and his money) lost the match!!!!
is there any possibility that i might get a seat at this fabulous greens? :)
nice one..
i was shattered after my team, argentina, lost few days ago..picking up the pieces still..some are missing!
:)
dr pissed: About the title...merely listed my observations :)) Lots of people rooting for Germany.
Aks: You summed it up neatly :)
Sarah: LOL hope you find him soon, from your description I don't think we have your man :))
Mind Curry: Alas the coming matches are in the dead of the night and so no giant screen
:(
I kind of liked the atmosphere it created though...just like the stadium and the surround sound was awesome!!!
My condolences...hope you find all the pieces...at least the important ones :p
this world cup has been absolutely dejecting for me..Holland..Argentina..Czech..the teams i was rooting for is out..
After the Argentina-Germany match the atmosphere in the house suggested an impending funeral!!!
Maybe i will root for Portugal!!..Its always good to support the underdogs!!
:( No one came for Argentina !!.. It was really a dull mood on Friday Evening.. very sentimental and to me World Cup was over then.
Vamos Vamos Aregentinia.
On the Lighter Side Rum is the best medicine for those who lost. No Hangovers and can drink aplenty singing the Anthems :((...
Vamos Vamos Aregentinia.
Mathew: I am also rooting for Portugal,it will be nice to see a new face winning the World Cup :)
Dhanush: Agree to the medicine :)) Lots of sad faces and lots of jubilant faces around!! The latinos play with so much passion!
But bottomline is Argentina lost. The team which played with most passion and with respect to the beauty that beholds football lost. So cruel was the penalties.
As Alexis told, my world cup was over on Friday night.
I am shaken. No words. I retire.
sounds liks so much fun...
I'm rooting for portugal to win too
How nice..in big screen too. :) Portugal eh? Well..good luck. But I root for another. :)
Pophabhi: *hugs* I can feel your dejection as I saw the emotions myself. You know the funniest thing I saw was Asianet World Cup roundup, they showed the fans crying to the tune of "magalam nerunnu njaan manaswini". I don't know if they did it intentionaly but it was freaking funny :))
Thanu:It was fun..like being at the stadium :)
Quills:I don't have any particular favorite but ...now that most of the favorites have fallen we should cheer for the teams that have a royal battle in their hands! :)
I think my world cup will be over tonight... I have been supporting Italy all the way and I feel they will be crushed in the German onslaught tonight... But by any chance if it happens the other way round, I will be the happiest person around.. I have a bet of 5000 bucks that Italy will reach finals!!!
talking of guys and beer... i think both of them are "inseperatable" :D..i may be the only exception (i drink wine only). Reminds me of an incident which happend sometimes back. there was this guy(IT professional) who was moving into my friends flat. he had fridge, TV, vaccum cleaner etc etc with him, which he brought with him when he moved.. so we helped him to arrange TV, fridge etc etc in his room.. when me moved the fridge from the drawing room to his bedroom (yeah he wants his fridge in his bedroom!!!!)..we felt it too heavy..it was a normal 165 litre fridge, but felt very heavy....as the fridge was too heavy we were discussing the reason behind it...we though it may be becasue of that particular brand.....and after sometime the guy(new flatmate) opened the fridge.. and the view inside the fridge made as all say the F$%#$#$ word, becasue it contained 3 cartons of beer..yeah 3 cartons of beer stacked one on top of other. that was the reason the fridge weighed that much..that dumbass wasnt botherd to remove it atelast when mmoving the fridge from one flat to another...for him the fridge and beer was like jewellery box and jewels.
The best part of fun is to join in
adopt my philosophy.
go with the winning team
Italy Italy Italy :))
Anon: Hey you must be celebrating, your team won y'day :) Here's wishing that you win that 5 k too :)
Monu: ROFL
"for him the fridge and beer was like jewellery box and jewels" good one!!!
Jaseem: That sounds like my philosophy too :)
I am richer by 5000 bucks... And now my friend wants to bet another 5000 that Italy wins the world cup... But I am content with this money and he is fuming around that his fave team Germany lost the match at the last minute and to top it all he lost 5000 money to me...
This bet was kept between us at the very start of the world cup and he was so sure that Italy will never reach the semifinals. I too was skeptical about that.. I am the happiest guy around now...
Anon: Congratulations buddy!!! And you are wise to keep the money to yourself instead of wagering it. Have a drink on me :)
No interest whatsoever in football. But I just got to know today that you have this blog too. Missed so many of your hilarious posts. :(
Suji: Welcome here, this blog is more of a rant zone, serious stuff and my momentary insanities :)
*not to be left out* and everlasting insanities in the form of comments from the likes of moi :)
Mind Curry: I was being modest doc when I said "momentary insanities"..what I meant was "everlasting insanities" :))
